TomTom and Microsoft collaborate on AI in the car.
“One question does everything”
TomTom says that the AI is built into the company's "Digital Cockpit," and that this, in turn, can be integrated into infotainment systems from car manufacturers. It is the AI that Microsoft TomTom uses, but they emphasize that they have also done their bit, ending up with an "AI-powered conversational assistant for the car that enables more sophisticated voice interaction with infotainment, location search, and vehicle command systems.
Drivers can speak naturally to their vehicle and ask the AI-powered assistant to navigate to a specific location, find specific stops along the route, and voice control onboard systems to, for example, turn up the temperature, open windows, or change the radio station. All with a single interaction.”
Must be something completely new that actually works
When it comes to what Microsoft is bringing to the system, the company mentions Azure OpenAI Service, Azure Kubernetes Services, Azure Cosmos DB, and Azure Cognitive Services. The press release is aggressive and believes that this is a revolutionary way to talk to your car, and even more importantly: that the driver can ask anything and be sure that the car delivers the items.
TomTom and Microsoft have been working together since 2016. Back then, TomTom gave life to Azure Maps. Later, the collaboration expanded to also apply to mapping data and services for Microsoft's own maps.
As a natural development of the relationship, the companies are now collaborating on automotive solutions, driving innovation for generative AI-driven automotive solutions, and developing a digital cockpit and in-vehicle infotainment solution with cloud analytics.
