Everyone wanted the app

Proton, a popular encrypted email service, has finally launched Windows and macOS programs in beta.

The beta can be tested for paying customers

Proton is one of the most popular for encrypted email, if not the most popular, and now those who pay for Visionary can subscribe to gain access to the beta version.

Note that offline email support is coming later. Proton also reveals that all customers will have access to the programs in early 2024.

It has always been possible to use Proton e-mail with other programs in the past, but only when using Proton Mail Bridge in combination with e-mail clients that support IMAP/SMTP such as Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, and other programs. Besides what looks like a clean and neat interface, you avoid using the extra program.

Furthermore, Proton brings encrypted and automatic email forwarding for paying customers, both in the browser and the program. However, the encryption only works when forwarding to other Proton users. In addition, the Swiss company has upgraded the calendar in the browser version.

This is not in place now, but will come later:

  • Offline mode support.
  • Switching accounts is not supported. If you need to use a different account, you must log out and log in again.
  • No warning mark for unread messages.
  • Clicking on a new email or calendar notification may not open the appropriate window.
  • Mailto links don't open the app.
  • ICS files won't open the app.
  • Setting up Easy Switch is disabled. You can use the web app instead to import email or set up a forwarding.
