It is a sad day for all gaming fans who started visiting the E3 Gaming Expo in Los Angeles over 20 years ago. As you know, E3 2022 was cancelled.
E3 – 1995 to 2021
"After more than two decades of hosting an event that has served as a central showcase for the US and global video game industry, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has decided to end E3." This is stated by Stanley Pierre-Louis, president and CEO of ESA. ESA is the industry association that represents the interests of the gambling industry in the USA.
As The Washington Post points out, there are several factors at play, including the biggest companies wanting to run their own show and more sitting at home and streaming accelerated by covid.
Sony pulled out in 2018 and Nintendo already started in 2011 with their "Direct" videos where they reveal new products. Ubisoft formally pulled out in March of this year. “From before it is known that Microsoft does not provide Xbox and neither does Nintendo. What Sony chooses to do is not known," we wrote at the time.
Even if everyone was able to drop by E3 2019, the bottom line, according to Pierre-Louis, is that the companies, as already mentioned, can do their own thing via a number of channels. Before E3, CES in Las Vegas was the scene of gaming news, but as the industry grew, there was more than enough interest to fill Los Angeles with gamers for three days. Now that era is over.
