Microsoft wonders why you're trying

Microsoft is doing everything to prevent Windows users from switching from Edge to a competing browser.

Ask why users switch

You may have noticed that when updating the OS, you are often met by a start-up "tutor" who asks if you want to trade Office and OneDrive, and if you want to switch to Edge and Bing as the default search engine - a choice which is set as standard, naturally enough.

But it doesn't stop there (in addition to full-size ads for Edge on the Chrome website), because now the company has another stunt going: a survey to see if Microsoft detects when you try to download Chrome in Edge.

What Microsoft has done is use the "Action center" toolbar that pops up on the right side of the browser, to ask the user "why are you trying another browser," with the following option:

  • It is not easy enough to search with Google

  • I can't access my Google Docs

  • I don't have my favorites or passwords here

  • Too many ads and pop-ups

  • I don't like the news feed

  • It's going too slow

  • My sites don't work with Microsoft Edge

  • My reason is not listed

From before, Microsoft makes it easy from the "Action center" in Edge to define the browser as default with "recommended settings." We were unable to trigger the survey.
