Regrets the bad deal

In 2016, Microsoft downgraded the OneDrive free version from 15 GB to 5 GB.

No wonder users reacted

Back then you could keep the original 15 GB if you took action, this time it is Microsoft who must take action following a change communicated on 31 August this year.

After they announced that Outlook attachments would count towards the 5 GB, of course, it ended with complaints. E-mail inboxes tend to take up many GB if it is a few years old and many were probably stressed to have time to move their data so that they could once again receive and send e-mail. This does not change, but there is more.

Curiously, Microsoft also chose to double-count photos uploaded to OneDrive. The company wanted to do something a little extra for the customers due to the limitation and gave the customers extra storage space but only for one year. You must then pay for the extra storage space if you want it.

This is what Microsoft wrote at the time about the unpopular change:

Microsoft is committed to improving your Microsoft 365 experience, and we want you to know about an upcoming change to the OneDrive photo storage infrastructure. Soon, data from photos stored in your gallery and in your albums will count separately against your total Microsoft storage quota. This change will gradually roll out across accounts from 16 October 2023.

The change may affect how much storage space you have available. If you're over your storage limit, you won't be able to save new files to OneDrive, sync files to OneDrive, or send or receive emails on Outlook.com. To help you avoid such interruptions, we are giving you a one-time storage bonus when the data change is made to your account. This storage bonus is free and will expire one year after the issue date.”

Still does not include pictures

It all sounds messy, so Microsoft is making changes. In a message, they write that they simply do not want to roll out the change that would have included OneDrive photos and photo album data against the OneDrive storage space.

This change was scheduled to start rolling out on October 16, 2023. Based on the feedback we received, we've adjusted our approach. We will no longer roll out this update.
