A mistake makes it much faster

The file explorer in Windows 11 is faster, but not thanks to a clever solution, but a bug.

"As fast as Windows 7"

Like us, you may have been annoyed by the file explorer in Windows 11, which, if not much slower than in Windows 10, is not exactly faster. It can be particularly slow when loading when previewing images and not least search results, which is also a nuisance as Microsoft constantly hopes you are looking for something online (with Edge) rather than local content. But that will be a digression.

So how can one "hack" a faster file explorer in Microsoft's latest operating system? The solution is trivially simple and not so strange: open it in full screen with F11, like a web page, and press F11 to go back to normal view - whoops, the file manager is much faster in every way. It is not only faster when you open the folder to look at content, but also searching is much faster. It is easy to notice in the clip below.

That shouldn't be possible

Neowin points out that the error affects all Windows 11 versions. This includes the very latest canary test versions of 21H2. “Although the bug makes File Explorer faster, it would be better if we could have this kind of performance by default. Windows 11 should have better overall performance than previous releases, but that doesn't seem to be the case,” Neowin points out. We agree and expect a bug fix.

I tested this on a music folder with 1800+ subfolders and 25000+ files: Everything opens instantly and it's amazing! This is the performance we had in Windows 7 explorer.
