You can lose everything

Google says that for security reasons they will delete Google accounts that have been inactive for two years.

This applies to consumer accounts only

Before, it was the case that Google might delete the content of inactive accounts, but now the new strategy is to delete the accounts after two years of inactivity. This means that you will not be able to access any photos (Google Photos) or email (Gmail.) Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Drive, Meet, Calendar) is also affected, but it is only about private accounts.

If you have an existing subscription set up through your Google Account, for example on Google One, a news publication or an app, we also consider this as account activity and your account will not be affected. Additionally, we have no plans to delete accounts with YouTube videos at this time.

It starts on the eve of the year

Google will start the cleanup in December and deleted Gmail addresses will not be published again. The company explains that it is for security reasons that they are now cleaning up, not least for fear of reused passwords:

“Even with the security mechanisms, if an account has not been used for a long period of time, it is more likely to be compromised. This is because forgotten or unattended accounts often rely on old or reused passwords that may have been compromised and do not have two-factor authentication set up and receive fewer security checks by the user. Our internal analysis shows that abandoned accounts are at least 10 times less likely to have 2-step verification than active accounts.”

You can do this to ensure that the account is not deleted from December 2023:

  • Read or send an email

  • Using Google Drive

  • Watch a YouTube video

  • Download an app from the Google Play Store

  • Use Google Search

  • Sign in to Google or third-party services with Google Sign-in
