New Apple products revealed

Apple has not been tidy enough in its code.

New products have leaked in the iOS test again

Beats Studio Buds.
For now, several new products in the iOS 16.4 release candidate version (Release Candidate, or “RC”) have been leaked to developers that have just been launched (one of the big improvements is voice isolation for mobile calls over the mobile network).

There are no other major new features in the beta, so this is a pleasant surprise.

9To5Mac has spotted a pair of new Beats Studio Buds+ (8214) with a specially designed Beats chip, and not the H1 or H2 chips known from AirPods. The design should be almost identical to the current model and there are buttons for play, pause, and ANC on and off.

The new plugins get support for audio sharing, automatic device switching, and "Hey Siri." It was first speculated that these would use Apple's own chip.

New AirPods now don't quite make sense, do they?

At the same time, and perhaps more excitingly, Twitter account @aaronp613 has revealed that the iOS 16.4 RC code contains references to a pair of new AirPods. The model number is A3048 and the case is numbered A2968.

New AirPods haven't leaked simply because it's probably too early: they were updated to the third generation in 2021. AirPods Pro 2 arrived last September.

Maybe it's the 2021 models, but with USB C? Maybe it's the AirPods Max 2? AirPods Max was launched in December 2020 and is therefore overdue for a new model.

It is not unreasonable that Buds+ and perhaps a couple of new AirPods with USB C will be launched at the same time as iOS 16.4, which is expected next week.

This is new in iOS 16.4:

  • 21 new emojis

  • Notifications for web apps added to the home screen

  • Voice isolation for mobile calls prioritizes the voice and blocks noise around you

  • Duplicate albums in Photos extends support for detecting duplicate photos and videos in an iCloud-shared photo library

  • VoiceOver support for maps in the Weather app

  • Accessibility setting to automatically mute video when light flashes or strobe effects are detected

  • Fixes an issue where Ask to Buy requests from children might not appear on the parent's device

  • Addresses issues where Matter-compatible thermostats may become unresponsive when paired to Apple Home

  • Crash detection optimizations on iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models
