Must be scrutinized extra carefully

Apple and Google are being investigated again in the UK.

Reviewed by the CMA
"The Competition and Markets Authority" (CMA) has already found Apple and Google guilty of anti-competitive activities, but now they will again investigate Apple for a "complete investigation" of Apple's market position in the games and browser market. They will also look at Google's position in the mobile browser market.

One of the things to be re-examined is Apple's ban on streaming apps for games - Xbox Cloud Gaming works for example. only in the browser on iOS and iPadOS devices.

The watchdog for monopolies in the UK has started an investigation into the technology giants Google, Facebook, and Amazon due to the secret algorithms that covertly control large parts of the digital economy.

They will also look at the requirement that other browsers use the WebKit framework, the company's own.

The CMA can only make recommendations to the government, and not itself introduce new laws or regulations.

We wrote about the first round in January last year:
"It is 'The Competition and Markets Authority, or CMA if you will, which is now investigating whether the algorithms these giants use are destroying customers by reducing choice, increasing prices and how they potentially manipulate how people consume news."

This is stated by the CMA
“Significant support has been revealed for a fuller investigation into the way Apple and Google dominate the mobile browser market and how Apple limits cloud gaming through the App Store. Many of the complaints come from browser vendors, web developers, and cloud gaming service providers who say the current situation is hurting their businesses, stagnating innovation, and adding unnecessary costs.

Web developers have complained that Apple's restrictions, combined with potential underinvestment in browser technology, lead to added costs and frustration as they must deal with bugs and errors when building websites, and have no choice but to create custom mobile apps when a website might suffice .”

It is therefore included in the complaint that Apple knowingly and willfully does not want to use so many resources on Safari and that it is the developers who have to bear the brunt in the form of app development costs because Safari apparently cannot achieve the same. We haven't heard of this complaint before, but it's an interesting development.
