iPhone error disables iMessage and FaceTime

An error has been discovered in the US with T-Mobile and other operators such as Vodafone (UK) and Lyca, that eSIM no longer works for sending iMessages and for making FaceTime calls.

Italian and Canadian customers have also experienced the problem.

FaceTime and iMessage stopped working
What happens is that iMessage and FaceTime simply deactivate the eSIM phone number, which is very unfortunate. In other words, it is not possible to send iMessages or use FaceTime.

 

One of those plagued by the problem is Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, whom we often quote in relation to Apple's upcoming products.

 

Now he is complaining about a foolish mistake on Twitter:

IMessage and FaceTime accidentally deactivate the device's mobile number and there is no need to activate it again. The only solution that helped me was to get a physical SIM card. An extremely disappointing problem, "he explains on Twitter and follows up with another possible solution: to remove the eSIM account from the mobile and set everything up again.

 

Gurman points out that this is a complex solution (which can also fail - see tweet below) that "most people should not have to do."

 

The problem has been current with iOS 15.4, 15.5, and 15.6 betas 1, reports Gurman who can not rule out that even older versions of iOS may have the error. The question is whether this is an iOS error or an operator error - perhaps a combination because there are several operators involved?
