The British Consumer and Competition Authority (CMA) has clearly stated to the Facebook group Meta that they must sell away from the popular GIF sharing platform Giphy.

Prevents competition
The reason is that according to the CMA, the acquisition has a negative effect on users of social media and that it also affects British players in marketing. This can already be noticed according to the British competition agency, which reports that Giphy has now been removed as a potential competitor in the advertising market.

 

Meta has disagreed with the criticism surrounding the acquisition and reports that they are considering appealing the decision.

 

The great disadvantage for competitors
The panel that has assessed the issue has pointed out that Meta can use the opportunity to refuse other social media to use the increasingly popular GIF sharing platform, and that this can reduce competition between the various social media.

 

In turn, this will result in more traffic on the Meta-owned services such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram - which together account for 73% of the total time social media users in the UK are on social media according to CNBC.

 

It is also pointed out that there is a possibility that Meta will take advantage of the acquisition to demand more user data from services such as TikTok, Twitter, and Snapchat through changes in the terms of use.
