Facebook apologizes: their AI tagged video of black men as 'Primates'

Facebook has apologized for the error and calls it "unacceptable".

“Lies down flat” Facebook has apologized after the company's AI put the label "Primates" on a video of black men. According to The New York Times, a message came up asking users if they would "continue watching videos about primates".

Facebook has in a statement apologized for "the unacceptable error" and disabled the feature that produced the message. They are now going through the case to find the cause and prevent similar things from happening again.

Google removed "gorilla" from search

We have made improvements to our AI, but it is far from perfect and a lot of work remains. We apologize to all those who may have received these offensive recommendations.

Face recognition technology is still far from perfect and has a general tendency to misidentify colored people and women.

Last year, fake face recognition hits led to unlawful arrests of two black men in Detroit.

In 2015, Google Photos tagged images of black people as "gorillas", and Wired revealed a few years later that Google had "solved" the problem by censoring the word "gorilla" from search and image tags. 40,000 videos are not enough A couple of months ago, Facebook let its AI work its way through 40,000 videos with 3,000 paid actors of various ages and genders.

The company had used professional lighters to teach the AI what people with different ethnicities look like under varying lighting conditions. The dataset was clearly not enough to completely solve the AI's racial confusion.
