Several technology supporters contribute
The National Science Foundation contributes $ 60 million to the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) project, which also receives support from a number of technology companies. The publication writes that most of the components are provided by Dell EMC, while Intel processors will play an important role.
In addition, it is known that companies such as Mellanox, Nvidia, and Green Revolution Cooling will also provide components for the Frontera project. The online shredders Google, Amazon, and Microsoft will assist with cloud technology, writes Austin Business Journal.
Must be ready next year
For the university, the supercomputers are an important piece of research and the current machines should have helped them with discoveries such as the detection of gravity waves and the development of an artificial intelligence-based tumor recognition system, writes the news media.
The goal is now to create a supercomputer that is two to three times more powerful than Stampede2 - operated by TACC - from 2017, and as a whole becomes the fifth most powerful in the world. TACC is also behind the supercomputer Stampede1 from 2012.
The plan is to complete Frontera in 2019.
