Apple has been seen removing apps from the App Store that break its guidelines regarding data sharing. The activity has been noted by 9to5Mac and relates to two sections in its App Store Review Guidelines.
According to section 5.1.1 and 5.1.2, apps which send location data to third-parties without consent from the user are not allowed in the Store. It’s these apps Apple is targeting. It is re-evaluating apps it suspects of violating the rule, removing them, and contacting developers.
Apple says the apps which are removed do not inform the user about data sharing practices, including asking for permission to share, and explaining what happens afterward. Apple makes it clear any data collected and shared must relate to the software, or improve the experience in some way.
Although Apple hasn’t quoted the new General Data Protection Regulations soon to be enforced in Europe, the crackdown may be linked to the tougher rules.
