Yesterday, Canonical released a new LTS (Long Term Support) edition of the popular Linux distribution Ubuntu.

big Update
Version 18.04, also known as Bionic Beaver, is the first LTS version of Canonical in two years and includes five years of support and updates (ie until April 2023). OMG Ubuntu describes the update as the largest Ubuntu launch for a long time.

The GNOME Shell desktop replaces the previous Unity desktop and is a more modern and cleaner version. Canonical has previously described it as a necessary step for the company to be listed on the stock exchange. Note that Unity is still available in 18.04.

At the bottom is the updated Linux 4.15 kernel, which includes a number of news and hardware support improvements. This means that more PC equipment such as keyboards, graphics cards and other devices work better out of the box.

Gathers user data
Another news is that the company will now retrieve anonymized user data. This includes which Ubuntu version is installed, PC manufacturer, CPU model, which desktop environment is installed, the system time zone and which packages are installed. This is enabled by default, but it should be easy to "sign out". Canonical plans to make data sets public so you can see statistics about Ubuntu users.

And yes, Ubuntu 18.04, of course, has better support for emoticons via a new "emoji select".

OMG Ubuntu summarizes the launch with the following news:

  • New GNOME Shell desktop.
  • Setting option «minimal».
  • Linux Core 4.15.
  • Access to Snaps apps.
  • Support for color emotion icons.
  • Support for Thunderbolt 3.
  • Updated apps.
  • New make goal app.
  • Python 3.6.
