Microsoft is afraid that state actors can use the vulnerabilities behind the WannaCry worm, and once again go to the "most unusual" step of releasing a security update for Windows XP.
Very real danger
The security update for Windows XP was terminated three years ago in 2014 and one of the few times the system has received updates since then during the WannaCry attack last month.
This attack was a reminder for all of the very real danger of cyber attacks against businesses and individuals around the world, "said Microsoft.
«Elevert risk»
Now they have discovered new vulnerabilities that constitute an "elevert risk" for cyber attacks from national states, they write in their blog.
- To address this risk, we currently offer additional security updates along with our regular Tuesday update. These are made available to all customers, including those using older versions of Windows, they are writing.
Historical worm
The WannaCry worm infected more than 200,000 machines globally with loose money last month and threats have been made of multiple attacks based on the same vulnerabilities, which came from the NSA hackers hall and were released online by The Shadow Brokers in April.
If you have newer versions of Windows, the new sikkherts updates will be installed by themselves, but if you have an older version, you may want to start running Windows Update today.
