The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple is in talks with OpenAI.
OpenAI can report that they have over 200 million active weekly users, doubling since November 2023. API usage has also doubled.
Also, Nvidia and potentially other unnamed companies are also said to be interested.
iOS 18.1 in October – iOS 18.4 with new Siri in spring 2025
Certainly, the company will be interested in investing in the AI company that will deliver information to Siri when Apple's own assistant cannot answer. The user can choose whether he or she wants to use the service. This implementation is not in place yet.
What makes the matter a little spicy is that arch-rival Microsoft owns around 49 percent of OpenAI. Microsoft should also be interested in putting more money into the company, as mentioned in the same report. It is not known how much Apple is willing to inject, but OpenAI was valued at over 100 billion dollars in the previous investment round.
iOS 18.1 with "Apple Intelligence" will be launched in October. Upgraded Siri with LLM will be in beta in January with iOS 18.4 beta 1 and in the finished version during the spring. Apple just removed the US region requirement to enable the AI features in iOS 18.1 beta 3.
