Mark Gurman and iFixit have long since confirmed the temperature and humidity sensor in the HomePod mini as early as March 2021.

The new functions will arrive next week
Now it turns out that Apple is ready to activate the function now that the HomePod 2nd generation is available to order with delivery on February 3.

 

The new HomePod also has a proximity sensor for easy transfer of music from the iPhone to the HomePod only when physically present.

 

There is also support for the new smart home standard Matter.

 

Can warn of fire
The new speaker also has the same functions to work in tandem with smart home equipment to automate everything from cooling (fans, AC systems, etc), to sun shading.

 

There is even more: Apple says it will activate an audio notification in the HomePod mini and HomePod 2nd generation that detects fire and smoke alarms - a notification is then sent to the owner's iPhone if the sound is registered.

 

But does it sound better?
These are functions that have been there, ready for when Apple was ready to suddenly launch an "upgraded" version of the HomePod from 2017, but with five instead of seven tweeter elements.

 

It's a slightly quirky product (the price cut helps a bit), and we're excited to see if it sounds better than the original.

 

Either way, the features are enabled with HomePod software 16.3, which just landed in developer RC and is all set to launch next week alongside iOS 16.3 and iPadOS 16.3.
