Tesla is banned in this city

Elon Musk, Tesla and China mainly have a good relationship, although Musk believes that Chinese Xpeng has stolen their autopilot software.

Tesla and China do not always have a single relationship

It was in the summer of 2019 the news broke:

It emerges from the lawsuit, which was filed by Tesla in March this year. The person in question, Guangzhi Cao, admits that he gained access to the source code and uploaded it to a private iCloud account in the form of zip files. Cao was one of around 40 people who have access to the source code for the Autopilot system.

Beyond this and an episode with a former ex-employee, it has not stormed around patents and lawsuits, probably also because Elon Musk is more in the spotlight in relation to Twitter acquisitions and job cuts at Tesla.

Will this problem flare up in China?
But now China and Tesla are in the spotlight again, albeit not in relation to patents, but the fact that China does not trust where the video recordings the cars make with all the cameras is sent and stored.

Already last year, this was a theme:

Teslas are banned from military bases in China and personnel there are not allowed to drive the cars. This is because they actually record video to make the AI better - there may be sensitive information in such areas, which is why the Chinese authorities have restricted access. It makes sense: military areas often have a photo ban no matter where you are in the world.

Since then, Tesla has set up a data center in China, but that is not enough for the coastal city of Beidaihe, which has simply banned all Tesla from its roads for two months. The reason is supposed to be top-secret meetings among the political leadership in the country, and that they do not want the cars to intercept information about where individuals are moving.

In any case, Tesla's plans for the country are big: they want to double production capacity in Shanghai where they have a Gigafactory.
