Will the password torment finally end?

It was in 2019 that we first wrote about FIDO, an alliance with the purpose of getting rid of passwords.

Are we finally approaching a solution?
Now three years later and we are still putting here with password processors, SMS codes, and randomly generated codes used in combination with a personal password - should it never end?

Apple joined the alliance in 2020, but since then we have not heard much.

Built into Chrome, Android, and Microsoft services
But now the big three, Google, Apple, and Microsoft, say they are committed to expanding the use of the FIDO standard in order to perhaps achieve a universal password-free everyday life.

Google is also involved and says that they will build FIDO in Chrome, ChromeOS, and Android, while Microsoft will build support in their apps and services.

To summarize the FIDO solution:
The expanded standards-based features will give websites and apps the ability to offer an end-to-end password-free alternative.

Users will log in the same way they do several times each day to unlock their devices, such as a simple fingerprint or face verification, or a device PIN.

This new approach protects against phishing and logins will be radically more secure compared to passwords and older multi-factor technologies such as one-time passwords sent via SMS. ”

Uses the phone's biometrics and is passwordless
The new approach is that users will soon be able to access their FIDO login details on all devices without having to re-register for each account. The industry association also explains that users can use FIDO login on their mobile device to log in to an app or website on a nearby device, regardless of OS or browser.

The authentication of username and password will also work regardless of OS and browser and the FIDO login will be served with a "single sign-on" option without the need for a password or recovery method.

The authentication takes place with the unit's already built-in biometrics. Apple's iCloud Keychain also uses FaceID to log in, but this way of doing so only fills in traditional passwords that are already stored on the device.
