Chrome 97 is launched today with a controversial feature

Today, a new version of Google's browser is launched in the so-called Stable channel. Chrome 97 brings several new features, and among them is a new feature to the keyboard API with controversial publicity that several browser competitors have made a conscious choice not to implement.

Risk to privacy
The function means that browser applications such as Excel, PowerPoint, and Word can have access to identify what kind of keys have been used in specific regions, be it English or Norwegian layout. Both Apple and Mozilla have deliberately avoided implementing such a feature in their browsers, Safari and Firefox, respectively.

They justify this with the fact that the function can pose a privacy risk in that the API can be used to identify and track you - especially if you use a keyboard layout in a region where this is not common.

In addition to this feature extension, Chrome 97 brings news in the form of better tools for deleting browser data and a nicer design of web applications. For Chrome on smartphones, functionality is added to remember which zoom level you prefer on specific web pages.

Now you can delete everything
Previously, under the tab for privacy and security, it was possible to delete individual cookies, while Chrome 97 now allows the user to delete all data stored by a website. This option is added under a new tab called Web Page Settings.

Nicer design for web applications means that the top field finally gets a function and looks like a part of the website, where website developers can now use this as a search field, navigation buttons, and the like.

Chrome will automatically install the latest browser update on your device, but you can check for it yourself by going to the Chrome menu (the three dots at the top right), navigating to "Help" and then pressing on “About Google Chrome”.
