Sony is no longer losing money on the PS5

Sony's PlayStation 5 console (PriceSpy 5999 kroner) is no longer sold at a loss. Sony's CFO Hiroki Totoki shared the news a week after the company announced that it had sold ten million PS5 consoles.

PS3 was the worst
Although the PS5 with hard drive is no longer sold for less than the cost of producing it, the cheaper and disk-free PS5 Digital Edition (Price Hunt 4799 kroner) is on its way to offset Sony's related losses from other hardware sales such as accessories and PS4. Last quarter, Sony sold 500,000 PS4 consoles, which beats the lifetime sales in excess of an impressive one billion kroner.

It took several years before Sony stopped losing money on PS3 sales. Sony stopped selling the PS4 at a loss around six months after its debut in 2013. The PS5 has taken a little longer, but the company is clearly not repeating the costly exercise they did with the PS3, despite reports that Sony struggled to set the price of the PS5 due to expensive parts.

104 million PS users
Sony also reported the highest revenue ever on PlayStation in the first quarter of this year, and the second-largest revenue ever for PlayStation in a quarter outside the holidays.

There are 104 million active users every month on PlayStation Network. They spent an average of $ 37.09 each ($ 327) on digital software, add-ons, and services in the first quarter of 2021.

Microsoft is losing out on consoles
Microsoft revealed earlier this year that they do not make money on hardware alone, they sell Xbox consoles at a loss. Microsoft has not reported on hardware sales for some time, but one of the Xbox leaders revealed during the Epic-Apple war that Microsoft has a profit on the sale of games and subscriptions to online services.
