Intel regained all lost market share from AMD in one fell swoop

Nearly three out of four CPUs on Steam Hardware Survey come from Intel. AMD has eaten market share from Intel since the beginning of the year, but last month Intel has taken everything and a little back.

It May be due to the Zen 3 drought
We are not talking about large monthly fluctuations - a few percentage points, but it is an interesting development feature. Whether there is a trend remains to be seen. Probably the numbers are a reflection of the short-term unavailability of AMD's gaming CPUs based on Zen 3 (Ryzen 5000 series). The Ryzen 9 5950X and Ryzen 9 5900X are sold out on both Amazon and Newegg, and prices have increased.

Steam's hardware survey is not entirely scientific, but it's the best snapshot we have of PC hardware trends. In June, Intel took a 1.72 percent share from AMD to land at 71.58 percent. That is a swing of 3.44 percent (Intel took 1.72 percent and AMD lost 1.72 percent).

Fluctuation of ten percent since January
Intel's share in January this year was 66.51 percent against 33.49 percent for AMD. During the first half of the year, Intel has managed to increase its already-dominant share by another five percent. A fluctuation of ten percent is not insignificant.

Steam's hardware index only states it gives no answer as to why things happen, but the glide can probably be attributed to a combination of silicon deficiency and reduced prices on Core processors.

Core i7-10700K (Comet Lake) went for $ 380 at the beginning of the year. It now goes for 320 on Amazon. The price-tracking on CamelCamelCamel shows that it was down to $ 260 last month. This is just one of several examples.

Tough time for the self-builders
The GPU deficiency may also have affected. It has been a tough time for the self-builders, mostly due to the lack of graphics cards. For a short time, inventories of power supplies were also limping.

Of graphics cards, the GeForce GTX 1060 is consistently the most widely used GPU on Steam - about every tenth GPU is a GTX 1060. Then comes the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti. The 12 bestsellers all come from Nvidia. AMD's Radeon RX 580 is No. 13, followed by the GeForce RTX 3070, the only one from Ampere with a share of more than one percent.

Signs in time suggest that GPU deficiency is easing. It will be exciting to see what it looks like towards the end of the year. Next year will be even more exciting when Intel comes with discrete GPUs.
