If customers say no, millions of Amazon gadgets will join an online experiment

The function uses a small part of your own WiFi network to send LE Bluetooth and 900MHz radio signals between compatible devices over longer ranges than WiFi can handle on its own. In fact, we are talking about 800 meters in some cases.

 

Amazon's Call and Echo products already support the technology. New Echo and Echo Show 10 have Sidewalk built-in.

The goal is for garage door openers and cameras to work, at least in part, even if your own WiFi network does not extend far enough or fall down.

 

Amazon limits WiFi usage to 500MB per month and maximum real-time bandwidth is only 80Kbps.

Now the function is rolled out, and if you do not say no thank you, you are with
June 8 is the date Amazon activates the function that will turn large parts of neighborhoods where Amazon is strong, into wireless networks where neighbors can help each other with network connection if you should drop out.

The feature is on by default on devices with Alexa, which includes Echo and security products from Ring, outdoor lights, motion sensors, and Tile tracking chips.

The function is currently only being rolled out in the USA.
