Volkswagen: Fully self-propelled goods delivery and taxi. Tested already this summer

Volkswagen will start testing autonomous vehicles in Germany this summer, the company announced last Wednesday.

The German carmaker's ID Buzz will use hardware and software developed by Argo AI, a Pittsburgh - based startup funded by Ford and VW - which according to VW is an "extension of VW's global alliance with Ford".

Fully self-propelled goods delivery by 2025
The plan is to launch a completely self-propelled commercial goods delivery and card taxi service in Germany by 2025.

Managers from VW and Argo recently opened up a bit on the timeline for launching revenue-generating services based on VW's vehicles and Argo's autonomous technology.

Argo, which together with Ford has tested its technology in the US in recent years, said that they will launch the fifth generation of their automated driving technology in the VW ID Buzz, the electric version of VW's iconic minibus.

Lidar sensors, radar, and cameras

We work with Volkswagen in a way that sets us apart from everyone else. We deliver a safe, smart and scalable product for autonomous driving. Argos technology includes lidar sensors, radar and cameras. In addition, the vehicle is able to "see" the environment, plan the next steps and predict the movements of cars and pedestrians. This in combination with the Argos sensor package - enables autonomous driving at all speeds.

VW plans to let its subsidiary Moia operate a fleet of autonomous vans. Since 2017, Moia's electric cars have served three million customers in Hamburg. The feedback from customers is a treasure chest that Moia will reap when the company switches to fully autonomous vehicles by 2025.

“As easy, convenient, and reliable as driving your own car”

In recent years, we have learned that customers and authorities have high and specific expectations for autonomous car sharing systems. Customers expect it to be as simple, convenient and reliable as driving their own car. While the authorities expect it to contribute to less traffic congestion.
