Is Microsoft doing well with Game Pass?

Five million from January 2022 to October 2023

In January 2022, the company officially announced that it had 25 million paying customers - now it has been leaked from the LinkedIn profile of Craig McNary ("Senior Director: Platform & Brand Marketing") that they have "over 30 million members." It is therefore only around five million from January 2022 to October 2023.

 

It does not sound like a very aggressive increase in customers, but the starting point is not several hundred million customers either.

 

For a kind of comparison, Netflix has had around 240 million paying customers since the start of online streaming in January 2007. Xbox Game Pass was announced in the summer of 2017. To compare with arch-rival Sony Playstation, in May this year PS Plus had 47.4 million members divided between three different subscriptions.

In Norway and the rest of the world, Xbox launched Game Pass Core last week, the cheapest subscription at NOK 59 a month:

“Introducing Xbox Game Pass Core, featuring online multiplayer on console, a catalog of over 25 high-quality games, exclusive offers, and more.

 

Experience hundreds of hours of gameplay from an incredible catalog of famous titles from long-running series like Forza, Fallout, and Psychonauts – along with fan favorites like Ori and the Will of the Wisps and Grounded,” Microsoft advertises. The package is a better offer than Xbox Live Gold but therefore offers a far smaller game library than Ultimate.
