Approaching the Apple iPhone

The very first GeekBench figure for Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has been revealed.

Finally over 5000 points in the multi-core test

It is a Vivo X90 Pro+ mobile that has run the test of the CPU at 3.2GHz.

Here is the new number and a number of other chips from Qualcomm and Apple:

  • Vivo X90 Pro+: 1480 – 5106 (Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2)

  • iPhone 14 Plus: 1737 – 4532 (Apple Apple A15)

  • Pixel 7 Pro: 1040 – 3206 (Google Tensor G2)

  • Pixel 6 Pro (GeekBench 5 average): (Google Tensor G1) 969 – 2660

  • iPhone 14 Pro Max: 1867 – 5488 (Apple Apple A16)

  • Galaxy Z Fold4: 1283 – 3593 (Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1)

  • Galaxy Z Flip4: 1232 – 3629 (Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1)

  • OnePlus 10T: 1035 – 3468 (Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1)

  • OnePlus 10 Pro: 970 – 3431 (Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1)

  • OnePlus Nord 2T: 678 – 2844 (MediaTek Dimensity 1300 Octa-core)

  • Xperia 1 IV: 1176 – 3252 (Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1)

  • iPhone 13 Pro Max: 1726 – 4680 (Apple Apple A15)

As you can read from the numbers, this is an excellent increase in the multi-core points, and in fact, several hundred points more than the iPhone 13 with an Apple A15 chip is capable of, although somewhat weaker on the single-core test.

The chipset is only 400 points behind the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Apple has not been able to increase the speed as much in recent years, so it will be interesting to see if they catch up starting with the A17 chip, or if they have more tricks in store.

About the new chip
Improvements include WiFi 7 and:

A main core based on ARM Cortex-X3 @ 3.2GHz
Four high-performance cores (one more than last year) @ 2.8GHz
Three energy-smart cores @ 2.0GHz
All cores are 200 to 300 Mhz faster than last year's Gen 1 chips. The CPU is 35 percent faster than Gen 1, and 40 percent more energy efficient.

Qualcomm is also moving forward with the Adreno GPU, which is now up to 25 percent faster (and with ray tracing support at the hardware level) and 45 percent more energy efficient. AI performance is improved a whopping 4.35 times with an upgraded Hexagon CPU.
