It will soon be over and out, warns Microsoft

Microsoft warns those still using Windows 8.1 that things will stop soon.

Beware: security updates disappear soon
As of January 10, 2023, 8.1 users will no longer receive technical support for any reason, software updates, security updates or bug fixes.

As a reminder, Windows 8.1 will no longer receive support starting January 10, 2023, when technical assistance and software updates will no longer be provided. If you have devices running Windows 8.1, we recommend that you upgrade them to a more up-to-date, used, and supported version of Windows. If the devices do not meet the technical requirements to run a more up-to-date version of Windows, we recommend that you replace the device with one that supports Windows 11.

These are the choices you have
It is strange for Microsoft to recommend Windows 11 all the time the OS requires TPM and “Secure Boot.” Therefore, CPUs older than six years rarely work with Microsoft's latest. The hardware requirements for Windows 11 and the 2022 update are otherwise identical.

Windows 11 is the most secure Windows ever built, with comprehensive end-to-end security covering antivirus, firewall, internet protection, and more. This means more security features, dashboard screens, and continuous updates to protect against future threats – all built-in at no extra cost. To receive updates, internet access is required and service charges may apply.

It is also possible to install Windows 10, which Microsoft points out has to support until 2025:

“Windows 10 is still available and will be supported until October 14, 2025. You can check if your current PC meets the minimum system requirements for Windows 10. If it does, you can purchase and download a full version of Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro. You can also check with retailers to see if they still offer Windows 10 for sale.”

Microsoft says it does not offer free upgrades from Windows 8.1 to either Windows 10 or 11.
