Ben-Edwards from How-To Geek has an excellent guide on how to install Microsoft's classic OS, Windows 3.1 from 1992, on a modern iPad.

iDOS 2 is here
It's thanks to iDOS 2 on the App Store that makes it possible to make the iPad a retro classic with the competitor's OS.

If you just want to play with old DOS games:

 

 

Make sure you have a valid license, of course, and then copy the Windows installation files from a Mac connected to an iPad, and over to the iDOS folder on the iPad (or just use a third-party cloud solution). This is also the same folder everything you do in the OS is saved.

When iDOS is set up correctly, type from “iDOS C:> w3setup \ setup”.

You can also run older MacOS versions on iPad with Mini vMac (altstore)

 

The same thing was possible ten years ago, and fortunately, the support here is still:
