The EU will present its new plan for digital services at the end of the month. They believe that the current regulatory framework is not optimized for the digital economy.
Spotify complains about Apple, the EU complains about everyone
They want to make it so that companies like Apple and Google can not market their own apps at the top of their services, like Google in search results.
You may remember that Google got a giga-bot in 2017 when they promoted their own shopping guide.
This not only has to do with search, but also remember that Spotify believes that Apple is abusing its position in the market to beat them.
The EU statement points in the direction of the rule changes that are coming
"With power and strength comes responsibility, and part of that is, for example, that you do not market yourself when your services are in competition with other services," explains EU Margrethe Vestager, who leads the EU's competition policy.
Without knowing the details of the new plan, a number of large companies will probably have to make changes in how they promote their own services, but we doubt that there will be any major changes.
And, even if they do get fined, these companies have such large cash reserves that they rarely or never make a difference.
