Serious bug in Snapdragon chipset.
Serious bug in Snapdragon chipset.
According to Check Point, which has found the errors, Snapdragon can be found on around 40 percent of all mobiles in the world. There are a total of three billion Android devices with different chipsets in the world.
Google believes Qualcomm itself needs to sort it out
No less than 400 vulnerabilities have been found in Qualcomm's chipset, and there is no bug fix to download yet. Qualcomm has sealed the bugs, but those bug fixes are not on their way to end-users yet. There are many third-party manufacturers of Android mobiles.
Qualcomm says about the DSP vulnerability, which was discovered by Check Point, that they work with Android manufacturers to find out and fix the bug, and that:
Google does not want to have anything to do with the case at this time and is forwarding questions about the problem to Qualcomm.
A DSP does very much important in a modern smartphone
So what is a DSP and what is utilized? A DSP is a "Digital Signal Processing" device that controls media such as video and images, but also AR.
The error can be exploited by the user downloading video, images, or other content processed by the DSP, in addition, attacks can be carried out to install dangerous apps that do not require the rights to start.
The advantage of DSPs is that they can do a lot, in a reasonable way, but that they also have vulnerabilities not found in other components.
As Check Point explains, "DSP chips are much more vulnerable because they are organized as 'Black Boxes' because it can be a very complex task for anyone other than the manufacturer to review the design, functionality, and code."
