Secures both OS and Safari
Later this year, support will be added to iOS 14, Big Sur, and the other Apple OS's in Safari as well.
The advantage of securing the DNS is that snooping on your IP, which makes the search for an IP address which in turn translates to the domain name, is that addresses you visit do not leak outside the link between client and server.
This extra security layer, already built into Chrome and Firefox, also makes it more difficult to perform human-center attacks.
Allows third parties to provide support over their own services - modify macOS settings as usual
A little back to Safari support in the new OS, here Apple will offer DOH (DNS over HTTPS) support from third parties like Cloudflare. It will still be possible to modify the DNS settings as usual. This will create additional security because in this way you can choose the supplier you feel the safest.
As Cnet points out, Google-backed support already in its 2018 launch of Android Pie.
