Do you guess how fast PCI Express 6.0 will be?

Four times as fast as PCIe 4.0 and with incredible performance figures.

After a few years of slow development, things are really beginning to happen in the PCIe world. PCI Express (PCIe) is for many enthusiasts known as the interface standard between key PC components, such as motherboards, graphics cards, or network cards.

PCIe version number 5.0 was announced not long ago, but it will hardly be in products until next year. But even before it gets on the track, the next future generation is now on the drawing board. PCI-SIG announced in a press release that the technical specifications plans for PCIe 6.0 have begun.

Double transfer from PCIe 5.0
The tradition of believing will also double the transfer rates from the previous version. PCIe 5.0 already promises to be twice as fast as 4.0. But with PCIe 6.0, PCI-SIG says the goal is to deliver 64 GT / s - that is, 64 billion transfers per second! To cope with these speeds, advanced techniques such as PAM-4 (four-level Pulse Amplitude Modulation) are used, as so-called low latency FEC (Forward Error Correction).

Demanding applications in the coming years
Measured in the amount of data, it should have 256 Gigabytes per second with an x16 configuration. PCIe 6.0 should at the same time be backwards compatible with all previous generations of PCIe. At first glance, this may look much more than is necessary - but considering the explosive growth expected in artificial intelligence, augmented reality, demanding simulators and data models, interfaces like this will be crucial to performance over the coming years.

According to the plan, PCIe 6.0 will reach the first products on the market by the end of 2021.
