The defense in Russia fears backdoors in Windows switches to Linux

The same goes for the Chinese military.

Earlier this week, several media reported that the Chinese military is planning to throw out Windows and replace it with a new operating system due to fear of US espionage.

Now it is reported that the Russian military is also getting ready to remove Windows. In the future, the country will make use of a home-based Astra Linux distribution. It is based on Debian and was originally launched by a company called RusBITech in 2008.

Astra Linux is now top-level security clearance
The OS has previously been trusted for "secret" and "top secret" information, but last month, Astra Linux was trusted for information that is "particularly important" by Russian Federal Service for Technical and Export Control.

In practice, this means that the operating system is security cleared at the highest level and that Russia can really start the transition from Windows to Linux, writes ZDNet.

Fear Windows backdoors
When the Russian Defense Ministry announced its plans last year, the decision was justified by the fear that Windows would contain potential backdoors that could be used to spy on the Russian government.
