SpaceX is among the companies that want to use satellites to bring the internet to several parts of the world. Now the goal can be closer than ever.

More benefits of flying low
The Federal Communications Commission, FCC, has now approved the SpaceX plan, which involves flying its Starlink satellites in low ground, 550 kilometers up the air. Originally, the plan was to fly them 1,150 kilometers up.

The approval means that SpaceX's scheduled launch is on track. Perhaps the launch will take place already in May.

The fact that the FCC allows the satellites in the low ground path means that SpaceX needs fewer satellites and that it will provide fewer signal delays and reduce the risk of room litter.

Fear of interference
But SpaceX has also encountered protests in connection with its satellite plan. Kepler Communications and OneWeb have both expressed concern that the Starlink satellites may interfere with their own satellites.

However, the FCC has concluded that the satellites will not cause "significant" interference. Nor was the concern that the satellites could cause collisions was considered probable.

  • Affordable and reliable broadband

  • SpaceX president Gwaynne Shotwell is very pleased with the approval.

- This approval underscores the FCC's belief in SpaceX's plans to deploy its next-generation satellite constellations and connect people around the world with reliable and affordable broadband services.
