The company revealed yesterday that unauthorized people have been able to gain access to several Outlook.com accounts because someone who is employed in the support department has been hacked.

The result has been that the hackers have access to e-mail addresses, folder names, and e-mail topics. However, the actual content of the emails and attachments has been unavailable.

The number of users affected by the break-in is not known, but according to Microsoft, the hackers had access for several months - from January 1 this year to March 28

"Our data indicate that account-related information (but not the contents of some emails) may have been viewed, but Microsoft has no indication of why the information was viewed or how it may have been used". wrote Microsoft in an email to affected users.

The hackers should not have managed to steal login details or other sensitive information, but Microsoft still recommends the affected customers to switch passwords for security.

This email is sent to users affected by the hacking. (Ill .: Microsoft)
