Ever since Instagram was launched, users have navigated the app by scrolling down.

 

Now the service has started testing a horizontal image stream for some users. Or, it should just be for some, but ended up hitting far more than Instagram itself meant.

 

Went wrong
Instagram's Adam Mosseri explained on Twitter that "this should be a very small test, but became more applicable than we thought".

 

So the test revealed that Instagram plays with the idea of showing only one post at a time and that you have to swipe further to see the next post.

 

Each post and comments get a lot more space, but at the same time, it becomes more time-consuming to look at more posts.

 

To show more advertising?
This is probably a smart way to expose advertisements, but we are uncertain of how well it is received by the users.

 

The change is anyway reversed now, so everyone should have regained the original way of displaying posts.

 

But it may indicate that the service is about to roll out the new image stream, though not now, so maybe in a short time.
