This is not a new message app from Google. Fortunately, one may say, because it's not long since the company launched Duo and Allo. Further development of the latter is paused. Instead, it is a new technology that can replace today's SMS and is based on the Universal Profile for Rich Communication Services (RCS) standard.
The chat will be batched directly into the Android Messages app, and instead of sending regular text messages, messages will be sent over the Internet. If the receiver supports RCS, it gets an automatic "richer" version. If not, send the message as an SMS. No matter how iMessage works.
Has broad support
The Verge writes that Google has for several years been working to get support for RCS and that the company plans to roll out Chat in the next 12-18 months.
Google has previously stated that 43 mobile operators and device manufacturers support RCS, but in an updated list, it can be seen that a total of 55 operators, 11 manufacturers and Microsoft will support the standard. Apple is so far not on the list.
