iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are lighter thanks to the use of titanium frames.

Feel lighter than they are

The use of titanium has lightened the weight by around 10 percent, from ‌the iPhone 14 Pro's 206 g to well under 200 g on the iPhone 15 Pro: 187 g. One thing is now the numbers, but another clever way to make the user feel that the devices is even lighter than they really are is how the weight is balanced in the body, or put another way: how the mass is distributed over the iPhone body, which is otherwise made of aluminum.

Using an industry-first thermomechanical process, the titanium bands enclose a new substructure made from 100 percent recycled aluminum, bonding these two metals with incredible strength through solid-state diffusion.

“Not noticeably bigger”

The most important thing mobile manufacturers can do, beyond choosing the correct materials to balance weight and durability, is how the weight is distributed over the unit in relation to the axis of rotation. The big question now is whether the titanium frame is so tough that many people will to a greater extent drop the extra weight that covers add - Apple did not say anything about the glass being stronger, so if you lose your new iPhone 15 Pro Max at close to NOK 20,000 and the glass shatters, you have to pay out anyway.

 

Apple charges NOK 5,790 (Apple: “cost estimate”) for the iPhone 15 Pro Max front glass, and NOK 4,790 for the same repair. The iPhone 15 is somewhat cheaper (NOK 3,999), while the iPhone 15 Plus costs the same as the iPhone 15 Pro.

 

At the same time, the company has dropped leather in all products, including its own covers. Instead, Apple sells cases with the material they have dubbed "finely woven:"

“The material is made of durable microtwill and has a soft surface reminiscent of suede. The material fine weave was designed with the environment in mind. It is made from 68 percent recycled content, and has a considerably lower carbon emission compared to leather. It fits perfectly and follows the shape of the iPhone without making it noticeably larger.”
