6G milestone: Stable terahertz transmission over 100 meters

The first data transfer with prototype technology for 6G recently took place over a distance of 100 meters.

6G prototype technology
LG Electronics, the Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-Institut (HHI), and the Fraunhofer-Institut für Angewandte Festkörperphysik (IAF) created a test setup of mobile connection in the frequency range between 155 and 175 GHz over a distance of 100 meters. The researchers installed 6G prototype technology on the roofs of Fraunhofer HHI and the Technischen Universität in Berlin.

Power amplification crucial
Those involved focused on stable connections over 100 meters. LG writes in its own report: “Due to the short range of 6G THz and power loss during transmission between transmitter and receiver, one of the biggest challenges was the need for power amplification to generate a stable signal over ultra-broadband frequencies. The power amplifier developed by LG, Fraunhofer HHI, and IAF was crucial to its success. ”

The speed is unknown
How fast the data connection was is not stated. In June, research teams in the United States achieved 6.2 Gbit / s, but over a distance of only 15 meters.

LG further writes: “The power amplifier is capable of generating a stable signal power of up to 15 dBm in the frequency range between 155 and 175 GHz. LG was also able to demonstrate the technology that determines the direction of the signal and changing directional antennas that combine the output signals from several power amplifiers. ”

The 6G standard should be completed by 2025
LG is among the leading companies in the development of the 6G standard for mobile communications. Since June, the company has held the position of Chairman of the Board in the Applications Working Group of the Next G Alliance, which develops the specification.

The development is still only in its infancy: the 6G standard will be completed in 2025, but it will be many years before the technology becomes widespread in everyday life.
