The music video is mainly known as the main component of the internet meme rickrolling. It involves tricking someone into clicking on a link for something that turns out to be the music video instead.

 

Memet became popular on 4chan in 2006 and spread to the rest of the web over the next year. In 2008, rickrolling was a well-known cultural phenomenon that recurred both on and off the internet.

 

The number of views only applies to the main video and not the countless remixes and covers of Never Gonna Give You Up that are available on Youtube.
