The May update contains some nice news many will appreciate.

Microsoft has made it a habit to launch two major updates a year. One in the spring part, the other in the fall. This year's first feature update is called the "May 2020 Update" which indicates that it is just around the corner at the time of writing.

In the latest updates, it has not been Microsoft's focus to launch so many big news, but often the focus has been to optimize and make Windows 10 run more stable.

With alternating luck.

The May update is thus not packed with new features, but below we have picked out 11 news, from Windows Late's handsome overview, which we think you can benefit from.

Sky Recovery
The first one we have already written about and it is possibly also one of the best news. After installing the May update, you can finally recover Windows 10 from the cloud. Until now, if something went wrong, for example, you had to use a memory stick with Windows 10 to restore/reset the installation, but that is history soon.

When you press reset Windows 10, you get the choice to download from the cloud, which requires 4 GB of storage.

Optional updates
While we are in for updates. Microsoft is introducing, or should we say reintroducing, since this was also in place in Windows 7, an "optional updates" menu for drivers for accessories such as mice, keyboards and the like.

There you can choose whether you want to install or not, just like in Windows 7.

Bluetooth A2DP
Another feature that was available in Windows 7 and that returns in Windows 10 is Bluetooth A2DP. A2DP stands for Advanced Audio Distribution Profile, which doesn't really say much, but in this case, it is possible to use the PC as a Bluetooth speaker and stream music from the phone. Not unlike how Spotify and Spotify Connect work.

According to Windows Latest, the A2DP feature appears to be disabled by default, and you can enable it via an app in the Microsoft Store.

Faster performance
A novelty that does not apply to all Windows 10 users is better performance for hard disk PCs, ie the old turntable. Microsoft has updated how Windows Search works and will now reduce system, disk, and processor usage.

Windows Search works to actively index the contents of the disk. This gives you faster search results but affects performance. In the May update, Windows Search will reduce disk usage, which is good news for PCs with slower storage disks.

Task Manager
A little less news can be found in Task Manager and under Performance where you can see what type of storage disks are. For example, HDD or SSD.

In Task Manager, in the same tab as above, you will now also see the temperature of your graphics card. However, you need to have a graphics card that supports WDDM 2.4, Windows Latest points out.

DirectX 12
In addition to seeing the temperature of the graphics card, players will also appreciate another news in the May update. In place are DirectX12 features such as Raytracing tier 1.1, Mesh Shader and Sampler Feedback, but also Windows Driver Display Module (WDDM 2.7) support, which provides a better refresh rate when using a multi-screen setup.

By the way, you depend on using a graphics driver that supports WDDM 2.7.

Kaomoji
Emoticons have probably stolen the limelight from kaomoji, which are emoticons composed of various characters. However, in the May update, Microsoft adds new kaomoji which you can find by pressing the Windows key and period and then selecting ";-)".

Then you can easily send ╰ (* ° ▽ ° *) ╯ (¬‿¬) ¯ \ _ (ツ) _ / ¯ (⊙_⊙;) to friends and acquaintances.

If you were not aware of this, you will also find emoticons in the same menu.

Bluetooth
The May update also provides faster pairing between your PC and a Bluetooth device so you no longer need to open settings to add a new device - now it's done in the Action Center.

Even more seamlessly, the pairing goes for devices that support Microsoft Swift Pair. Samsung Galaxy Buds and Surface EarBuds are among the devices working with Swift Pair.

Virtual desk
Windows 10's virtual desktops also get a small update by naming them. Press the Windows key and Tab to bring up the virtual desktops and then name the different ones you use.

So far, you can't save virtual desktop layouts, but it's hopeful that it might be possible in the next update to Windows 10.

Tablet Experience
Microsoft's focus on tablets is not as dominant in Windows 10 as in Windows 8, but the former actually has a handsome tablet mode, which is now being updated with some minor news.

The update...

increases the distance between the icons on the taskbar
displays the search box only as an icon
optimizes File Explorer for touch
the virtual keyboard pops up automatically when you touch a text box

Paint, WordPad, and Notepad
Recently we have the news that Paint, Notepad, and WordPad will be optional features. It does not mean that they disappear from Windows 10, but you now have the choice to uninstall them.

Also in last year's spring update, Microsoft made it possible to uninstall several of the built-in apps.
