Later this year.

Smartphones are becoming increasingly complex and virus threats are also increasing in scope. Microsoft is now planning to launch Defender antivirus software for both iOS and Android.

The exact launch date has so far not been announced, but Microsoft says the app is coming later this year. The company will offer a preview of the apps next week during the RSA Conference in San Francisco.

Both Mac and mobile
The focus on mobile comes in the wake of Microsoft launching a trial version of Defender for macOS last year. To reflect that the antivirus service is expanding to multiple platforms, last year Microsoft chose to rename the service from Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) to Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection. On the Mac, Defender offers full protection against viruses and other threats and allows you to scan your machine for discomforts, among other things.

iOS limitations
We do not know much about the features of the iOS and Android editions of Defender for the time being, but we still know that the main purpose of the apps is to protect users from threats. But Apple doesn't allow apps to scan iOS devices for malware, so how Defender solves this is interesting to see.

Of course, Microsoft's focus should be on preventing phishing attempts. How this is done, we will probably know more about next week.
