Cheeky, YouTube!

An update to the YouTube app for Apple TV annoys.

Takes over the Apple TV's screensaver

Because the service has chosen to continue with its own still image screensaver which is supposedly far from as pretty as Apple's high-resolution 4K landscape videos.

Joe Rosensteel discovered what the update does after an update performed after the April 2 version rolled out: “It appears that the YouTube app, if the app is open, will launch a screensaver slideshow of generic stills taken from videos if not a video I've paused," he explains, adding that if the video is paused, the updated app shows thumbnails that "zoom infinitely, fade to black, and start over."

Some of humanity's worst sins exist in YouTube thumbnails, and they're not designed to be screensavers.

This trick works so far
So one might wonder if YouTube is going to throw in advertising in these views, it hasn't happened, but it could happen, and it's also possible that the following trick won't work later, but it works now: what you do for to stop YouTube from showing potentially low-resolution images, is to choose that Apple's screen saver should start after two minutes in the Apple TV's settings. That way, Apple's starts before YouTube's.
