Promise not to abandon customers

Now that Sonos has launched the Era 300 and Era 100, the question customers are asking is whether older products will soon be "functionally retired."

S1, S2 and soon S3?

It became excessively dramatic when Sonos differentiated between S2 and S1 products. S2 was the latest software for the latest speakers. Legacy products were delegated to the S1 software platform and functioned as before, but no longer received new features. As The Verge points out, only the Play:5 was truly abandoned.

You see we include things like Bluetooth and line-in. This will also help with support and future-proofing everything.

So there was a lot of controversy around something that perhaps shouldn't have been so controversial (all companies sooner or later have to abandon their products in one way or another) - how will Sonos deal with this in the future beyond Bluetooth and line-in?

Five or seven years?

The Verge, therefore, asked Sonos CEO Patrick Spence whether customers of S2 products such as Play:3, 3 and the second generation Play:5 should now fear for the future.

Spence says that these products will last for many years and that no one needs to fear that S2 products will be cut off the feature update map.

Spence stated during the interview that they support products that have reached the "end of life" (meaning that Sonos no longer sells the product directly) with updates at least seven years after this: "I think it's the best in the business." Spence has previously stated five years, so it is uncertain what the company's plan is.

The company hasn't hinted at or mentioned the S3 yet so S2 owners can be happy for now.
