Mac mini M2 256GB up to 50 percent slower

Apple's new MacBook Pro M2 is praised for its incredible battery life (up to 22 hours on the 16-inch model) and good performance.

A lot of performance for the money, but…

The Mac mini is praised for very good performance at a good price. The cheapest cost NOK 7,990.

The upgraded desktop can be equipped with a maximum of M2 Pro (from NOK 17,990).

This is a chip that is more than fast enough for a heavy photo and video editing, if not at the Hollywood level.

It is recommended to upgrade to 512GB
But then there were the NVMes, which are often not as fast if you choose the cheapest model.

Unfortunately, the situation is the same this year, but even worse: the entry-level model at NOK 7,990 (cheaper than the M1 model) has a slower NVMe than the corresponding M1 model, i.e. the 256GB version.

For NOK 2,500 more, you get 512GB and much better performance. The total price of the Mac mini M2 512GB then ends at NOK 10,490.

The reason is that the M1 model splits the storage chip into 2 x 128GB for better performance. The 256GB M2 has only one volume and therefore performs worse.

This affects the new MacBook Pro as well
We are talking about 1500Mb/s read and write speeds. It's not bad, but it's less than what Apple usually serves, and well below what is common in desktops. In any case, this is a performance decrease of 30 to 50 percent.

At the same time, 9to5Mac can confirm that the MacBook M2 Pro 512GB also has far weaker disk performance than the corresponding M1 model.

The M1 512GB model delivers 3950 write and 4900 read speeds. Unfortunately, the M2 Pro 512GB does not manage more than 3154 and 2973. This is not bad, but one does not expect poorer performance in an upgraded machine.

It is possible that the perceived performance, also measured in seconds in real programs, is reduced overall due to improvements in other parts of the system. At least that's what Apple itself stated to The Verge in the summer of 2022.
