Now HomePod can sense

Apple has finally released HomePod OS 16.3 for HomePod 1. and 2. and mini.

HomePod- 16.3 is more exciting than iOS 16.3

We finally say when iOS 16.3 launched earlier this week with the following:

  • New “Unity” backgrounds honor black history and culture in celebration of “Black History Month”

  • "Apple ID Security Keys" allows users to strengthen the security of their account by requiring a physical security key as part of the sign-in process for two-factor authentication on new devices

  • Support for HomePod (2nd generation)

  • Emergency SOS calls now require holding the side button with the volume up or down button and then releasing it to prevent accidental emergency calls

  • Fixes an issue in Freeform where some drawing strokes made with Apple Pencil or your finger might not appear on shared boards

  • Fixes an issue where the background appears black on the lock screen

  • Resolves an issue where horizontal lines may temporarily appear while waking the iPhone 14 Pro Max

  • Fixes an issue where the Home Lock Screen widget does not display the Home app accurately

  • Fixes an issue where Siri might not respond correctly to music requests

  • Addresses issues where Siri requests in CarPlay may not be understood correctly

Not everyone gets everything
What's exciting about the update to Apple's two speakers is support for the temperature and humidity sensor that was discovered long before this week's updates were ready; namely March 2021.

This means that you can be notified if there is a fire at home, also via other smart home equipment.

You must be aware of this with the measurements, per Apple:

"Temperature and humidity measurement is optimized for indoor environments in the home with temperatures from 15 to 30 ºC and humidity from 30 to 70%. The accuracy can be impaired in certain situations where loud sound is played for long periods. HomePod takes some time to calibrate the sensors after startup before the results are displayed.”

HomePod has a built-in sensor that measures the temperature and humidity in the room. And you can configure the blinds to close automatically when the temperature reaches 26 ºC.

Worth noting is that the HomePod 1. from 2017 does not support these two things, but the older model also has "upgraded volume control for more granular control of the volume at low levels."

One thing the mini doesn't get is improved speech in podcasts; it only gets the two largest models.

Note that you cannot ask the mini right away: it takes a few minutes to calibrate. In addition to asking Siri, you get the information in the Home app:

This is all the new stuff:

  • Temperature and humidity sensor measures your indoor climate with HomePod (2nd generation) and HomePod mini

  • Improved ambient sounds are more immersive and can now be added to scenes, automation, and alarms in the Home app

  • "Where's" on HomePod now lets you ask Siri for the location of friends and family if they've shared it with you

  • Repetitive home automation can be set up with just your voice

  • Siri confirmation tone will now play to indicate when smart home requests are complete for accessories that may not show a change or be in a different room

  • Sound Adjustment optimizes speech content like podcasts for even greater clarity on HomePod (1st and 2nd generation)

  • Updated volume controls on HomePod (1st generation) give you more detailed adjustments at lower volumes
