Teaming up to catch up with Starlink

OneWeb and Eutelsat will combine their satellite fleets to better compete against SpaceX Starlink.

Remains small compared to Starlink
In fact, the two companies will merge as long as they get approval from the regulatory body and investors. If all goes well, the agreement is expected to be completed in the summer of 2023.

 

Shareholders will each own half of the combined company.

 

Is nowhere near the Starlink number of satellites
Eutelsat has 36 satellites and OneWeb has 428 with plans to increase to 648. Together they will therefore have 684. This is against SpaceX's over 2,500.

 

OneWeb was close to bankruptcy in March 2020 and was looking for a buyer. It ended with the UK and Bharti Global each throwing in 500 million dollars to secure a 45 percent stake in the company, which also acquired an additional cash flow early last year.
