Windows 11 does not provide access to Google Play unless you do a little trick

There is a tick in Microsoft's promise from June this year to allow Android apps in Windows 11.

They will only, at least until further notice, be delivered via the Amazon Appstore (which is available via the Microsoft Store), but that means that you as a user will miss the wealth of applications available on Google Play.

The Amazon App Store offers a limited number of curated apps

In June, Microsoft promised that it would be possible to run Android apps on Windows 11 and a few days ago, Microsoft released the feature to insiders on the Windows 11 Beta channel.

A developer guide for the underlying Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) was also published.

But in the Amazon App Store, only a limited selection of curated apps are available. It is not at all certain that you will find your narrow favorite apps there, the ones that will be extra nice to be able to run from your laptop.

To work around this issue, the developer who calls himself ADeltaX has written a script that will make it possible to download the Google Play Services on the WSA. It is available on GitHub and is named WSAGAScript.

Follow the developer's instructions if you want to install the script:

  • Download MSIXBUNDLE (use store rg-adguard to download the msixbundle, Package id: 9P3395VX91NR, Ring: SLOW, size is around 1.2GB)

  • INSTALL WSL2 (ubuntu/debian, any other distro could work)

  • INSTALL unzip lzip

  • DOWNLOAD GAPPS PICO FROM OPENGAPPS (x86_64, 11, PICO)

  • EXTRACT MSIXBUNDLE, EXTRACT MSIX (YOUR ARCH) TO A FOLDER, DELETE (APPXMETADATA, APPXBLOCKMAP, APPXSIGNATURE, [CONTENT_TYPES])

  • COPY IMAGES (SYSTEM.IMG, SYSTEM_EXT.IMG, PRODUCT.IMG, VENDOR.IMG) TO #IMAGES

  • COPY (GAPPS PICO ZIP) TO #GAPPS

  • EDIT (VARIABLES.sh) AND SET ROOT FOLDEREXECUTE:

  • extract_gapps_pico.sh

  • extend_and_mount_images.sh

  • apply.sh

  • unmount_images.sh

  • COPY IMAGES FROM (#IMAGES FOLDER) TO YOUR EXTRACTED MSIX FOLDER

  • OPEN POWERSHELL (NOT CORE) AS ADMIN, EXECUTE (Add-AppxPackage -Register PATH_TO_EXTRACTED_MSIX\AppxManifest.xml)
