YouTube shuts down Discord music bot ‘Rythm’

A few weeks ago, YouTube began shutting down Discord music bots for pulling music from YouTube and circumventing advertisements. Groovy was the first to be shut down and now, one of its most popular competitors, Rythm, is also going offline. 

The Rythm bot will be shutting down on the 15th of September after running for five years and being used in over 20 million Discord servers, spanning 560 million users.

 

Like Groovy, Rythm would allow Discord users to type in commands and listen to music within the Discord server.

 

Speaking with The Verge, Rythm creator, Yoav, explains that the team “knew this was due to happen eventually”, adding that the team is now transitioning to “something new in the music space”.

 

This new project has been in the works for over a year at this point, so while the Rythm Discord bot is shutting down, there will be something else coming in the future.

 

Some other interesting facts revealed by Yoav include the fact that it took 16 servers, over 4TB of RAM, and over 1,000 CPU cores to power Rythm and keep it running for the number of users the bot had. As all of those users transition to smaller, still-running Discord music bots, some developers may need to make some upgrades.

 

KitGuru Says: I’m not sure YouTube will ever be able to shut down all the Discord music bots without getting Discord involved directly.

 

With that said, if we’re moving towards a future where server hosts need to switch to a new bot on a regular basis, then it is likely that interest will start to drop too.
